It looks like Apple is really happy about having Intel processors in their computers, and they are so confident in their brand name and everything else that they released the above on their homepage, Apple.com.
I think it is very bold of them, especially since what they basically are is another Compaq or Dell now. I can even put Windows XP on their “superior” hardware.
It should be interesting to see what happens to Apple over the next few years thanks to this development. I still would not mind one of their notebooks. They seem to have decent durability, good battery life, and it would be really neat to be the first on my block with an Intel based Apple laptop.

“I think it is very bold of them, especially since what they basically are is another Compaq or Dell now.”
LOL. I was not aware that Dell or Compaq produced their own OS. Did I miss something?
As for putting XP on Apple hardware, you have always been able to run XP on Apple hardware through Virtual PC so there is nothing new/exciting about that.

I could beg more, but it wouldn’t be pretty.
And Fonzo, no Dell and Compaq don’t make their own OS, but if I install a Beta of Vista on the Apple MacBook Pro, and the same on a Dell using a “Yonah” processor, what’s the difference except the huge difference in price?
As for running XP on Apple hardware, Virtual PC is an emulator, so it is akin to running a Super Nintendo emulator on your PC. It is not really a Super Nintendo is it? Well running XP through Virtual PC is not really XP, as it is not allowed the same abilities with the hardware and whatnot that the true XP would have. Atleast from what little I know about Virtual PC.

While I can agree that it is a bit two-faced of apple to be touting their new intel line so loudly when just a few months ago the G5 was the god of processors to them. But I think you will see that preliminary reports are saying that it’s not trivial (or even possible) to get a windows OS running on the production intel macs. Supposedly has a lot to do with apple using emi and not a standard bios.

It’s true, currently you can’t install Windows XP or Windows 2000 on the MacBook Pro, but There are reports that Windows XP 64 Bit could do it, and the beta of Windows Vista can be installed as well, as both support the EMI standard that came out after Windows XP Home and Pro were both released.
I am not sure why Microsoft couldn’t update Windows XP to support EMI, but I am sure that if they don’t some person will figure out a way to do it because that is what happens on the net these days. Some company says its impossible, a guy in his basement figures out a way to make it possible and sometimes too easy.

I would say the big difference is the quality. I have used both Dell laptops and Apple laptops, and I personally think Apple products have a higher quality to them (personal preference/opinion though, so it does not count for much).
In addition, I do not think there will be much of a price difference. The Intel Core Duo is a new chip, and if you browse Dell’s site right now, their Intel Duo chip laptops are running around $2,000 also.
As for running XP within Virtual PC, I have done that (and run it inside of VMWare), and can tell you the only thing it lacks is support to play high-end games (due mostly to being forced to share processor/graphic power). The experience of using the system however is perfectly in tact. The average user (email, www, IM, etc.) would not notice any significant difference between running a machine inside or outside of a Virtual space.
In fact, if you have never done it, I highly recommend you begin. It is a great way to test out those ’skeptical’ features on your system. ![]()

I am a Mac owner and I love my PowerBook; it’s solid hardware and the OS has a few things up on WinXP (it also has a few problems that drive me batty). I am not a fan of most PCs out there hardware wise and am waiting for a more powerful Mac Intel Duo to come out so I can run Vista on it.
That all said, these commercials pissed me off. I am embarassed to admit owning a Mac sometimes because I don’t want to be confused with all of those Mac zealots out there (of which Apple is the biggest of). There are differences between Mac and PCs, even still, but all this commercial managed to do was calm Mac Zealot fears regarding Apple’s migration and piss off a lot of other people with its arrogance.
I may like Mac hardware, and I may respect Steve Jobs, but as a whole I can’t stand the arrogance of Apple.
