Sabine and I will be moving soon, and the apartments we are looking at range from $600-$699 a month. The lower end being plus hydro, and the upper end being inclusive. I have decided to do a new write up of what we hope our expenses will be when we get into our new place. This is an update to Expensive Ottawa, written a while back when I did not have a job.

I also wanted to take a second to thank the commentors on the previous post, as what you all said was taken into consideration, and I appreciate that you took the time to comment.

We have decided on taking an apartment for $610 a month plus hydro, that will fulfill our needs over the next year: it will allow us to save.

  • Rent: $610 a month
    • Small 1 Bedroom - 560 Sq Ft.
    • Small Basement Storage (We will use it all)
    • No Parking
    • Hydro Extra
  • Hydro: $25 a month
  • Bus Pass: $130 a month
  • Groceries: ~$400 a month
  • Internet: $50 a month
  • Phone: $26 a month
    • Local Calling through Bell Canada - $22/m
    • Long Distance through Worldline $4/m

Total: Around $1245.00 a month.

That means we will be saving around $150 a month that we were previously putting towards rent, and because we are moving to a smaller place, we may be able to cut our monthly hydro bill by another $5 a month, for a total savings of around $1860 a year. Add on top of that the money I am now making with my job, and Sabine and I should be able to get married, and start our life in the next year or two. *excited*
