Sabine and I have been looking at houses, more and more often over the last few months. We have decided that we are not currently rich enough to afford our dream house, but we can get a few things we want without going totally broke.
Currently, we are looking at buying a house around the $140,000 to $180,000 mark. While we could not afford to purchase the house outright, we are hoping to have close to 15% for a down payment.
One of the things about the house is that it must be rather new, meaning that we don’t want a house that is older than twenty-five years old. It also can’t be too new, as most things that are going to go majorly wrong with a new house happen in the first five years after the house is built.
The next imporant thing is where it is, as we are hoping to move to Southern Ontario, somewhere around the London/Woodstock area. This will bring us closer to Sabine’s family, and thankfully, my job is location independant, though moving south will bring me closer to where my bosses live.
After that, other house specifications come next on the priority list, as we want to have around an acre of land, three or more bedrooms, one and a half baths or more, and mostly hardwood and ceramic floors throughout.
Some people have wondered if we are looking for a bungalow, hi-ranch, or whatever, and for the most part we don’t have a preferance, though I have taken a liking to sidesplits and backsplits, as they feel bigger and one room flows into another nicely in all the ones I have seen, but this is not a requirement for where we live. Actually, being able to get high speed internet is more of a requirement for me than the style of house, as being able to do my job is a requirement of where I live, atleast it is in my opinion. Sabine would like us to be out in more of a country surrounding, but I know for a fact that many places in the country won’t be able to provide me with my Internet requirement, so we lock horns on that one a bit.
It should be interesting to see what happens as we continue to save the best we can, and look at even more houses to try to find the house for us. If anyone has any advice or suggestions on home ownership, please feel free to leave them here, as we can use all the help we can get.
