For the ram and hard drive, what I do is buy them separately at a store like BestBuy. Makes the cost go way down. :P

Gotta have lots of ram, but yeah, Apple doesn't make them cheap...at least not as cheap as they should be.

Basically though I'd like to get a Mac Mini, but I will wait as it should be "updated" again soon.

And I agree about the MacBook vs the MacBook Pro, but there is something fetching about having that "pro" name behind it. It is like getting the Powerbook rather than the iBook. I dunno... maybe its just me.

If I were you I'd slice off the RAM upgrades (if there are any) in your two choices. There are much cheaper alternatives out there, and they aren't less reliable.

And if you chose a MacBook Pro, but intend to use it a lot for blogging in Wifi hot-spots, then I'd choose the normal MacBook instead because of it's extra hour of battery life, better portability and easiness on the pocket ;)

I'd suggest that you keep an eye here:
http://store.apple.com/1-800-MY-APPLE/WebObjects/canadastore.woa/wa/RSLID?mco=22E5096&nclm=CertifiedMac

I did buy a 15" Mac Book Pro (which I think you saw at one of the Ottawa weblogger meetups some time back), and I use Windows for web testing via Parallels - the best part of which is no rebooting.

I recently Freecycled my last official PC just to be rid of it.

I have a self-built PC (mediacentercase, packed with powerhouse-items, lol!), and a MacBook with 1Gb ram. All the graphics I make, from fiddling in Illustrator and Photoshop, to using Smultron for my websites, I keep grabbing my Mac. For some reason it just "feels" right to use a Mac for those things.

I do use my PC though, but primarily for games, movies, downloads and perhaps some fiddling in Painter (that program seriously hungers for a nice videocard).

But you could buy a MacBook Pro, ditch your own IBM-laptop, and use BootCamp to run both Mac OSX and Windows on the MacBook Pro :) You can hook that laptop onto your bigger monitor if you like, and use it as a desktop. Best of both worlds ;)
