This is a major update to my previous post entitled Trying to Move on in Life.

Quick Overview:
We want to break our apartment lease early. The company we rent with has known this for a long time, but has withheld information that would help us break our lease easier, and is basically of the mind that it’s too bad and wants to charge us a bunch of money, without regard to the fact that we have bought a house and have our wedding coming up soon. I contacted some local publications, and have been seeking their advice, as well as advice from lawyers.

The Update:
Sabine, talked to the Meddco office and came to an agreement with them that would have us use our last month’s rent for June and then pay the required $500 fee by the start of July for canceling our lease early. Sabine agreed to this and all was well, as we can afford that, it was just paying an EXTRA month of rent that would have put us into a really bad situation.

When she told me about that, I was still really frustrated, but I take my little victories where I can.

Just a day or two ago, the superintendent came by asking about the rent. We told him that the woman at the Meddco office said that our last month’s rent was coming into effect and we didn’t need to pay. He seemed to understand a left.

Today a notice was slipped through the door, and it made me wish that Sabine got the agreement with the woman from the office in writing. The notice I got today starts by saying that “This is a legal notice that could lead to you being evicted from your home.”

I was taken aback, and was in utter shock as I read over the form. They wanted $663.27 in owed rent. Our rent is $650 so I guess the monies above that is interest for non-payment or something…

It then says that if we don’t pay by the 19th of this month that we will be evicted.

I can’t even explain in words how angry I am with them, and the tactics they have been using. Sabine is hopeful that this is all a big miscommunication, but I think it is part of their underhanded plot to try to get us, good people, to pay as much money as humanly possible.

Sabine wants to go and talk to them tomorrow in hopes that this can all be resolved, but I almost want to ignore them and just move out this upcoming weekend, and never think of them again.

Even if it is a lack of proper communication between the superintendent and the Meddco Properties office, this is still ridiculous.

Update June 5th, 7:34pm: Sabine contacted Ed, the building manager, and he apologized for everything. He said not to worry about the notice, and even that they’d be willing to reimburse us for the newspaper advertisement. He wants us to pay him the $500 as soon as possible though, as he thinks that once we leave we won’t pay. Sabine is still very frustrated, as am I, over the hoops and emotional roller coaster we’ve had to ride. We are both glad that it is almost over.
