Sabine and I continue to look at homes, and get ever closer to buying one of our own. We already got pre-approval to go and place an offer on a small house in St. Thomas. The house has not even been built yet, but I look forward to it being done. There are two other similar models on the street. It is in a middle class housing development.
Tomorrow we go to sign some papers with some conditions on it, and then send it to the lawyer and mortgage broker to take care of. I am very interested to see if we will get final approval from a lending institution.
The big bummer comes in affording everything else once things get closer to closing. Lawyer fees, closing fees, etc.. are all going to cost an arm and a leg. I am not looking forward to that, and I am a bit worried to see how things go with my taxes this year as well.
The biggest worry Sabine and I have is actually appliances. Once we get the house, we haven’t really left ourselves any money to buy the needed appliances, and they don’t come with the house. No stove, fridge, washer, or dryer. We are hoping to get some used ones, but even that is going to be interesting to afford.
So if you know anyone that is looking to get replace their decent appliance or want to help donate to Sabine and I so we can get some appliances, please let me know. Anything over a dollar sent via Paypal or e-mail money transfer is of great help. Stupid appliances…
Also, wish us luck on this whole process. I hear it’s the most stressful thing we will ever have to buy.

I wish you all the luck for your new house.
Don’t worry everything has a way of smoothing out. ![]()

Maybe you will get appliances or money to buy them for wedding presents.
Love ya!

Hopefully, you two will wait until you get married to actually sign anything, because otherwise it won’t be joint property.

Live together for a year, man, and it’s a common law marriage. Game on.

Yeah, considering we have been together for four years.. I think we are good to go. We plan on getting married this year, but the housing market is just too good right now me thinks.

Good luck to you both
People told me that buying a house would be véry stressfull, perhaps even the most stressfull thing you ever did. After hearing that, I really dug deep and read through as much info as I could (taxes regarding the house, all the special fees like notary-costs). To my suprise, buying the house isn’t at all as stressfull as I thought it would be. It’s mostly a lot of signing papers (I felt like a celebrity even, hehe).
The one thing I found most annoying is the stress you get by renovating, because a lot of people you hire don’t seem to know what they’re doing, hehe. But if that’s all there is to it, I can’t say it was as stressfull as people say it is. Just keep your eyes open and make sure you read all the paperwork
I don’t know how it works in Canada, but in Holland we usually get a lót of money back from the taxes after renovating a bit, and the general monthly taxes you can get because you pay for your own house (I don’t really know how to explain this in English, hehe). My point is, if Canada works even a little bit similar as Holland’s taxes, you might even find that having a place of your own instead of renting can be a bit cheaper even… providing that the place is comparable in size.
Ah well, at least you will invest your money, so it’s always better then renting right? ![]()
Have fun buying… it will cost you time, but I think it’ll be a nice experience after you look back at it.

Wow, did I miss something big well I’ve been gone. Good luck on buying a house. Things are a bit stressful, and be sure to read everything they get you to sign.
There are a lot of little things no one ever thinks about.
I only have one real question for you, is this going to be like the digital camera thing? lol
